Facts About the Spanish Language

The origins of the Spanish language can be traced back to the 9th century. It grew out of colloquial Latin, which was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Roman legions in the 3rd century BCE.

Spanish, or Castilian, belongs to the Romance languages of the Indo-European language family.

It is the native language of approximately 400 million people, which makes it the second largest language in the world after Mandarin.

Spanish is the official language in Spain, as well as in all Central and South American countries, except Brazil, French Guiana, and Haiti. It is also widespread in the USA (especially in Arizona, California, Colorado, New York, New Mexico, and Texas), the Netherlands Antilles, and former Spanish colonies in Africa (Guinea, Morocco, and Western Sahara).

The first written monuments in Spanish have survived from the 11th century.

Spanish uses the Latin alphabet with 29 letters. It consists of about 100,000 words.

Nouns and adjectives are not declined in Spanish. The conceptual relationship of nouns is created with the help of prepositions. A distinctively Spanish orthographical feature is the use of the inverted question and exclamation marks at the beginning of a sentence, for example, in ¿Qué pasa? (What’s happened?).

Pronunciation and language use in different countries varies, but the differences are not so prominent to prevent mutual understanding. There are two main Spanish dialects spoken in Spain: Andalusian and Castilian.

The Spanish, or Castilian, literary language is based on the Castilian dialect. Being universal, it is understood by all Spanish speakers.
